About

Balloons in hotel particulierWhen my family and I decided to move to France in 2011, we could’ve chosen anywhere, but we plumped for Montpellier, a city perched along the centre of France’s southern coast in a region known as Languedoc-Roussillon.

Why? Well, let’s be honest, the weather had a lot to do with it. Languedoc-Roussillon is famous for its annual 300 days of sunshine, not something we were familiar with in London. And then there was its proximity to the sea, 20 minutes by car, a bit longer by tram and if you’re feeling energetic you can even cycle there in an hour or so.

Next up, the size. Being used to living in a big city, we were keen for somewhere that wasn’t too quiet. Montpellier is France’s fastest growing city apparently, not quite as big as London or Paris of course, but there’s certainly an energy here that makes it a lively place to be.

And, finally its transport links. It’s easy to get here, a three-hour TGV from Paris and a local airport with flights from London, Paris, Munich, Rome, Morocco and lots of others.

But most importantly, it’s just plain lovely here. The old town is full of gorgeous boutiques, unusual shops and galleries, and pretty cafés lining attractive squares. And the best thing? It’s surrounded by beautiful countryside. A walk to the edges of the old town will reveal a view of a stunning, mountainous landscape, and you can access it all within a few minutes of leaving the town.

There’s a lot to do here for visitors, and Montpellier and more is a way for me to share it all. As I discover more about this wonderful place I’ll add it to the website, and if there’s something you’d like me to find out or write about, or if you’ve discovered somewhere off-the-beaten-track, please feel free to drop me a line at montpellierandmore@gmail.com.
